Large SUVs are gaining popularity in Korea, but in fact, countries with similar environments to Korea like small vehicles. Even if you are not in Japan who loves light cars, the best-selling vehicles in Europe are small cars, not large cars.
A representative example is the Renault Clio, which has been imported even in Korea. In the European market, it is one of Renault’s best-selling vehicles, which exceeded 14 million cumulative sales. In Europe, such a vehicle is called a’B segment’ hatchback, but in Korea it is a small car. It is very popular because you can ride comfortably in the city center and have good fuel economy, but the compact body makes driving fun.
The problem is that the manufacturers do not welcome these vehicles, because they are not very profitable due to their low price. Therefore, manufacturers have devised a’B-segment SUV’, or’small SUV,’ that increases the garage and expands the interior space from the chassis of a small car. It is not a completely new concept, but it is becoming a trend in the market.
Hyundai is also targeting this market with’Kona’ and slightly smaller’Venue’, but a new compact SUV is added to it. It is a vehicle called’Bayon’, a jewel-like vehicle made based on the latest i20 (small hatchback).
The total length is a little over 4m, which is similar to that of the Venue (4,040mm). They are positions that overlap each other, but they are not sold together, but the venue and the country they are selling are different. Venue is a low-cost model mainly sold in the Korean and Indian markets and lacks convenience specifications, and in the European market where this vehicle will be sold, competitors have a lot of high-end equipment, so the convenience specifications are reinforced for competition. .
The new car was created in a design language called’Sensure’s Sportness’. The’composite headlamp’, which is the symbol of Hyundai’s SUV, is applied, and in a way, it looks similar to the Kona. You can see that it is a fairly luxurious model by looking at the details of the front light, which uses a lot of LEDs.
However, there is a lot to say about the rear design, but rather than Hyundai’s, there are a lot of details that are only seen in’Kia Motors’. The left/right tail lamps are made in a continuous shape, so it seems to give a sense of unity and looks pretty cool.
The interior design is similar to the i20. It has a similar configuration to Korea’s’Avante’, but two 10.25-inch full digital instrument panels are applied to show a future-oriented design. Additionally, advanced features such as ambient light will be applied.
The specifications are not that strong. Consisting of three gasoline engines, the 1.2L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine delivers an unsurprising 85 horsepower. If you’re looking for a slightly more powerful engine, there’s a 100 horsepower version with an added mild hybrid system, and a 1L turbo engine with 120 horsepower.
‘Bayon’, named after a French village, is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2021. It is a European strategic model and will be launched first in Europe, and there is no plan to launch it in Korea. Although it is smaller than the Kona, there will be no big problems even if it is released in Korea as it is a luxury vehicle with a more luxurious interior and a mild hybrid system that Kona does not have, and a semi-autonomous driving technology not found in the Venue.
