According to Japanese media reports, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsunobu said at a press conference that the maritime submarine “Canglong” was floating off the coast of Cape Ashizuri in Kochi Prefecture at 10:58 this morning (9:58 Taiwan time). A collision accident occurred, causing damage to the upper part of the hull and 3 crew members of the “Canglong” were injured. However, the “Canglong” was still able to sail, and an investigation team has been established to investigate the details of the accident.

The Coast Guard contacted the collided merchant ship, and the merchant ship said that it did not feel the collision and should not have damaged the hull; the Maritime Self-Defense Force revealed that the periscope collided with the cargo ship.

The Canglong-class submarine is the latest type of submarine of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in the early 21st century. It is the largest submarine built by Japan after World War II.
